Schindler has been selected to provide elevators for three office towers at the waterfront development in Sydney known as Barangaroo South. The AUD6-billion (US$6.06-billion) project is being built on the western edge of Sydney’s Central Business District and aims to be the first development in the city that is entirely ‘climate positive.’ The contract entails supplying 78 Schindler 7000 high-rise elevators and 28 Schindler 5500 elevators. The units are energy efficient and equipped with a transit-management system to optimize passenger travel. The project is expected to be completed by 2015. 

Canada

EHC Hosts International Innovation Summit

EHC Global headquarters in Oshawa hosted international marketing consultants from the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation on June 21. The visit was part of an innovation summit by the City of Oshawa. Consultants came from across the globe, including Beijing; London; Los Angeles; Mexico City; Munich, Germany; New Delhi, India; Paris; Shanghai; and Tokyo. They were given a firsthand view of the contrast between the manufacturing methods of a conventional rubber escalator handrail and EHC’s NT thermoplastic urethane handrail. In particular, the consultants were interested in the eco-friendly aspects of NT and the ability to apply custom messages and colors to it.

United Way Invests In High-Rise Communities

United Way Toronto is investing CAD800,000 (US$777,583) in two-year pilot projects to rehabilitate high-rise communities in Toronto. According to The Globe and Mail, repairing elevators will be among improvements. United Way will work with Community MicroSkills Development Centre for the Rexdale neighborhood and East Scarborough Storefront for the Kingston Galloway-Orton Park neighborhood demonstration sites.

Tüv Süd Relocates To New Facility

TÜV SÜD Canada recently relocated to a new and larger facility in Gormely, Ontario, to meet the rapid growth and demand for core and expanded services. TÜV SÜD Canada serves as a global testing, inspection and certification services firm. Visitors can tour the new facilities through September 30.

China

Kone To Supply 82 Escalators For Wuxi Metro

Wuxi City Mass Transit Development Co., Ltd. selected KONE to supply 82 TransitMaster® 140 heavy-duty escalators to the second phase of Wuxi metro line 2 in mid 2013. The Wuxi metro is currently under construction and will initially have two lines with 45 stations. Expected to open in 2014, metro line 2 will run 26 km east to west across the city of Wuxi and stop at 22 stations.

Riverside Century Plaza To Be Equipped By Kone

KONE has received an order to supply various vertical-transportation units to the Riverside Century Plaza in Wuhu, Anhui Province, which is expected to be completed in 2015. The plaza will comprise of three high-rise towers on an eight-floor podium built alongside the Yangtze River. The equipment will include 38 MiniSpace™ elevators designed for high-rise buildings, in addition to six MonoSpace® elevators, all of which will feature KONE’s EcoDisc® hoisting machines. The podium will be equipped with 34 TravelMaster™ escalators, and the facility will feature KONE’s E-Link traffic-monitoring system.

Germany

  Kübler Product And Branch Manger Appointed

Kübler Group recently appointed Jonas Urlaub as Product and branch manager. Urlaub’s responsibilities will include business development for drive technology and product management for functional safety. “I would like to develop innovative products for the drive technology and go on presenting the Kübler Company as a reliable partner for safe motion and position generation,” Urlaub said. Prior to joining Kübler, he served as product manager for SEW-Eurodrive. Urlaub received an engineering degree from the University of Cooperative Education in Karlsruhe.

India

Schmersal Builds A Facility Near Pune

Schmersal India Pvt. Ltd., the Indian arm of the German Schmersal Group specializing in electrical and electronic safety switchgear and systems, is building its first greenfield manufacturing facility in Rangangaon, an INR544-million (US$9.57-million) investment. According to Philip Schmersal, CEO of Schmersal Group, “The plant will be fully ready, and commercial production will start in the first quarter of next financial year, 2013.” Initially, the facility, near Pune, will manufacture electromechanical safety devices, electronic sensors and switchgears.

The German firm has three production facilities in Germany and one each in China and Brazil. The group entered the Indian market five years ago, importing products for the domestic market. “The Schmersal Group globally manufactures about 20,000 product range for various sectors, and, eventually, these will also be produced in India,” said Sagar Bhosale, managing director of Schmersal India. Bhosale explained the demand for electromechanical safety devices, electronic sensors and switchgears in the Indian market is rising steadily.

Italy

Hyundai Supplies 56 Units For Metro

In June, Hyundai Elevator received a contract to supply 56 escalators for Milan’s metro system. According to The Chosun Ilbo, Astaldi, Italy’s second-largest construction company and the contractor for Milan’s fifth metro line, ordered the units from Hyundai. The escalators will be installed at nine stations on the new line, expected to open in 2014. Hyundai, established in 1984, is one of the first Korean elevator firms to advance into the European market.

Sematic Lift Doors For High-Rise Project

Sematic Group supplied automatic doors for five high-speed Schindler lifts at the 126-m Torre Unipol office tower in Bologna. For this project, Sematic supplied its 2000 B-HR automatic lift doors: EI120 fire rated, with telescopic opening (1,000 X 2,100 mm). Specially designed for high-rise elevators, this product line allows for efficient traffic management flow and complies with EN 81-58 safety regulations.

North America

2012 Naesa Scholarship Recipients

NAESA International has announced the recipients of the 2012 Floyd J. Rommel and John Steele Memorial Scholarships. Rommel scholarship recipients are Samantha Watson, daughter of NAESA member David Watson, and Brittany Cox, granddaughter of NAESA member Harold Tompkins. Watson and Cox will each receive a US$3,000 scholarship. Steele scholarship recipients will receive CAD1,000 (US$985) scholarships from the Canadian Region and include Will Gervais, son of Canadian Region member Ted Gervais, and Evann Kremer, daughter of Rob Kremer.

Thailand

Kone To Supply Bangkok Development

KONE received a contract to supply 32 elevators for a high-rise residential development in Bangkok called Noble Ploenchit. The order includes 20 MiniSpace™ and 12 3000S MonoSpace elevators for three condominiums and one office building. The MiniSpace elevators are suited for high-rise buildings traveling at a speed of 4 mps taking residents from the lobby to the 50th floor in approximately 1 min. The elevators will be equipped with EcoDisc® hoisting machines and E-Link monitoring systems. The complex is being developed by Noble Development Public Co. Ltd. and will be completed in 2015.

U.K.

Office Building To Include Double-Deck Elevators

Included in the London Bridge Quarter development, a 600,000-sq.-ft. office building called The Place is being developed by Sellar Property Group on behalf of LBQ Ltd. According to Property Magazine, the 17-story building will be served by the equivalent of 12 elevators. Four elevators will have double decks, with each deck capable of holding 26 passengers, and another four will be single-deck elevators, capable of holding 21 passengers. The Place is expected to be completed by spring 2013.

Amalgamated Lifts Completes London Refurbishment

Amalgamated Lifts of Crayford completed a contract for the major refurbishment of 11 lifts at London’s Kingston-upon-Thames Crown Court in July. The contract, worth GBP440,000 (US$688,473), was awarded by consultant EC Harris and included the refurbishment of three judges’ lifts, two custody lifts, two juror lifts, a juror/staff lift, two public lifts and a goods lift. New control systems with variable-frequency drives and economy modes, which reduce power to down lighting in the cabins and main control panels when not in use, improving the energy efficiency of the lifts by up to 50%, have been fitted. The project took five months to complete and involved extensive work around court sittings in order to keep noise levels and disruption to a minimum. Other court contracts Amalgamated Lifts recently completed include those in Luton, Reading and Basildon.

5 Broadgate Office Building To Receive Kone Equipment

KONE received a contract to provide 31 eco-efficient elevators to 5 Broadgate, a new office building under construction in London expected to be completed in 2014. The order includes 24 MiniSpace® elevators, five MonoSpace® Special elevators and two bottom-drive MiniSpace elevators. The elevators will be equipped with an E-link traffic-monitoring system and EcoDisc® hoisting machines, which are up to 70% more efficient than elevators with conventional lifting technologies. The compact machine rooms will be in varying locations to suit the building designs and central London’s planning restrictions. The 14-story office building is currently being developed as a joint venture between British Land and Blackstone Group. Other partners include Make Architects and Mace as the management contractor.

Venezuela

Wheelchair Lifts Installed At National Pantheon

V.I.P. Elevator, a Garaventa Lift dealer in Venezuela, completed the installation of two wheelchair lifts at the National Pantheon of Caracas, Venezuela. The historical site houses the remains of several heroes who helped South America gain independence from the Spanish. V.I.P. Elevator installed Xpress II lifts for the renovation project. The inclined wheelchair lifts are designed for straight stairways with two landings and can be installed with little or no structural modifications.

TL Jones Selects Imea General Manager

TL Jones Ltd. appointed Dinesh Musalekar as general manager of its India, Middle East and Africa (IMEA) operations following the restructuring of parent company Halma’s Elevator Division. Musalekar will be responsible for promoting the full range of TL Jones, Memco and E-Motive products in the newly formed territory. He has nearly two decades of experience in the elevator industry and has held sales, operations, project and profit-center positions for major OEMs. He joined TL Jones in 2005 to build and lead the company’s operations in India. Musalekar graduated with a BEng in Electronics & Communications from Karnataka University and holds an MBA in Management from Mumbai University.
