Ultra-Thin, Acid-Etched High-Strength Glass

Ultra-Thin, Acid-Etched High-Strength Glass

In this Product Spotlight, Pulp Studio showcases a “zero environmental impact” offering.

Pulp Studio, the leading designer and manufacturer of technically superior decorative glass, has expanded its proprietary DermaGlass® collection with DermaAR™, an acid-etched, ultra-thin architectural material that is highly durable, lightweight, versatile and resilient for architectural and elevator cab applications. DermaAR is a matte finish option for back-painted or graphic interlayers where weight and durability are key factors.

With a slim thickness of 1.3 mm, DermaAR is a low-iron glass that is offered in sizes up to 58 in. x 118 in. It is an exceptionally tough, flexible, lightweight, scratch-resistant material that can be used with Pulp Studio’s Pintura™, a water-based back-painted coating system, or laminated with printed graphic interlayer. When used with Pintura, the glass has no volatile organic compounds and, therefore, has zero environmental impact from the manufacturing of the paint to the application and disposal of any paint waste.

Lynda Lax, president of Pulp Studio, said:

“DermaGlass fills a need in the decorative and technical architectural glass market with an ultra-thin, highly durable surface that can be designed, bent and technically manipulated to meet aesthetic and performance requirements. As we found more creative uses for this product, we recognized the need for multiple surface options. Now, after many years of research and development, we can deliver a highly durable product with minimal weight and a beautiful matte finish with this new DermaAR offering.”

Using an ion-exchange process, the ultra-thin profile of DermaGlass and DermaAR offers designers multiple options for design applications such as bent glass column surrounds or customized, decorative shapes while addressing performance needs for surface strength. DermaAR offers a smooth, matte surface that minimizes glare. DermaGlass and DermaAR meet the following U.S. standards for indoor use:

  • CSPC 16 CFR 1201 (laminated)
  • ANSI Z97.1-2009 (laminated)
  • ANSI maximum impact Class A
  • CPSC maximum impact level Cat II
  • DermaAR can be laminated or laminated to a honeycomb core for safety and ease of installation

Pulp Studio cleans and recycles all of its fabrication wastewater for reuse. The process not only makes the company more sustainable, but it improves performance and leads to a higher quality glass, as well.
