Unique installations from the company can be found at Yale, Kansas State and North Carolina State.
Over the past 34 years, Eklund’s has had the opportunity to work on several academic institutions’ custom elevator cabin projects. Each university’s cab interiors are as unique as they are rich in history and school spirit. From university art galleries to athletic complexes, Eklund’s has been brought on board to make sure each educational facility’s elevator cabs are as unique as the institutions they serve.
Yale Art Gallery
Eklund’s manufactured and installed the east elevator at Yale University Art Gallery as part of a major renovation undertaken by Ennead Architects (formerly Polshek Partners) in 2011. The elevator renovation was executed in conjunction with the gallery’s equipment and service provider, KONE.
The Eklund’s-crafted glass observation cab allows gallery visitors to catch a glimpse of each level’s art exhibits as it ascends and descends. A prominent feature, the cab’s doors are constructed from clear low-iron glass flush with bead-blasted stainless-steel framing around the perimeter, allowing dual-side passenger access and a picturesque view of both sides of the gallery. The side wall panels are also made from low-iron glass with a translucent inner layer, and are accented by bead-blasted stainless-steel trim and reveals. The steel’s finish is used continuously throughout the cab for the stantioned swing returns, flat bar handrails, front returns and headers.
The cab features a unique open-air grated car top with illumination from recessed LED strip lights in the front, center and rear. An ornamental feature, the top and bottom shrouding is low-iron glass with a translucent inner layer to match the side walls of the cab.
The gallery’s full transformation was completed in 2012, and Eklund’s is proud to have a piece of art on display in the gallery.
Kansas State Bill Snyder Family Stadium
Eklund’s manufactured and installed four cabs at the Kansas State University Bill Snyder Family Stadium as part of its Phase 2 Expansion (new construction) at the end of 2013. Executed via equipment and service provider Otis, they feature number-4-finish stainless steel for the bases, friezes, reveals and handrails and ceiling. The latter is in eight sections with LED lighting. The upper panels are made of 5/16-in. laminated glass with custom graphics on one side and metallic silver painted on the other. The lower panels use patterned finished stainless steel, and the binders are brushed aluminum.
North Carolina State Library
Eklund’s installed four passenger cabs with glass panels at North Carolina State University’s (NCSU) James B. Hunt Jr. Centennial Campus Library in Raleigh, North Carolina. Completed in 2011, they include satin stainless-steel handrails and ceiling. Work was done in conjunction with Schindler.
