In this, our last issue of 2020, an unforgettable year for obvious reasons, we are happy to highlight something positive: the pervasive beauty and creativity at work in this industry. The winners of Elevator World’s 2020 Photo Contest never cease to amaze with the outstanding quality and artistry of their images. We had more entries this year than ever, and the winners span the globe, coming from Taipei, San Francisco, the U.A.E., Dubai, London, Australia, Greece, Germany, Sweden, Hungary, Spain, Texas, Canada, Istanbul, Oregon, Colorado and Philadelphia. We hope you enjoy this impressive collection.
As we look toward 2021, we cannot ignore that COVID-19 continues to affect our industry. The dynamics are different in every country, and it is changing as we are writing. It is trending upward in the U.S., and some parts of Europe are experiencing a second wave and shutting down again. India and the Middle East continue to struggle with numerous cases a day. Through it all, the elevator business remains fairly stable. Elevator World, VFA Interlift and AFAG, in association with Credit Suisse, launched a survey of the industry and COVID-19’s effects. We report on the findings in COVID-19 Impact, Outlook. More surveys are planned, and we will report on each as they are completed.
Among the varied offerings of this issue, we follow the growing VT market of Russia in Russia Rising, and explore Safety in VT Systems – An Enduring Journey, which calls for a central worldwide date pool with all VT incidents in the hands of an independent authority. We highlight the one-of-a-kind VT project at Paris’ Stade Roland Garros, home of the French Open, in Prestige, Made in France. We also feature a first-hand account of the origins of the modern machine-room-less elevator in MRL Lift Design and Development.
We report on two virtual events. The Inaugural CTBUH Owner/Occupier Forum, which discussed the pandemic-related changes in their segment of the world. Toshiba Elevator Middle East got Serious About Safety and participated in a pandemic meeting with its Japan-based office.
There is much more to unpack in this issue, and we hope you enjoy and find value in it. If you don’t see what you are looking for in this publication, then contact us with your ideas. We are eager for you to communicate with us on what is happening in your company and with your projects. We look forward to 2021 and wish you health and safety.
