Hosted by culture expert Martin Lindstrom, the seventh episode of Newsweek’s “Why Do We?” weekly video series seeks to “untangle the unique quirks of human behavior” centered around elevators. In his search for an answer to the question “Why do we repeatedly press the elevator button, even though we know it won’t make the elevator arrive faster?,” Lindstrom reached out to Dr. Lee Gray, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and ELEVATOR WORLD correspondent and historian.
Live illustrations by Liza Donnelly accompany the more than 10-min conversation between Lindstrom and Gray. Gray started out with a brief overview of the history of hall-call buttons and thoughts on why people may feel the urge to press them repeatedly, sharing interesting facts about elevators and the industry as he explained. So, does pushing elevator buttons repeatedly do anything beyond making an impatient person feel better? Watch the episode to find out!
