For many, memories of summer camp include warm weather, time outdoors and fun with peers. So, what could summer camp possibly have to do with elevators? Your author was interested to learn that KONE Corp. has organized summer camps for the children of its employees since 1948. As its name implies, KONE Global Youth Camp welcomes campers aged 14-17 years old from across the world to Finland. Participants spend a weekend with local host families to experience Finnish culture before heading to the week-long camping program.

Most of the week is spent at the campsite doing activities including arts and crafts, water activities and sports. The camp goes a little deeper than most, however, with each year having a relevant global theme for the campers to engage with through various team exercises. One past theme was the question of inequality. Campers were divided into groups representing social classes and led through activities that emphasized the imbalance between those with resources and those without. Other topics have been disabilities, cultural differences and global warming.

One day is designated for a trip to Helsinki for the campers to complete assignments that let them see the sights and interact with locals. Ultimately, the program seeks to promote empathy, communication, teamwork and critical thinking skills. Campers have the chance to learn about other countries and cultures from peers who become friends. KONE Global Youth Camp 2023 was held July 14-23.
