American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) announced at its annual June 6 meeting in St. Louis that its 142nd president, Thomas Kurfess, has begun his term. The organization also welcomed one new member to its Board of Governors (BoG). Kurfess is an ASME Fellow and has been a member of the BoG since 2019. A HUSCO/Ramirez distinguished chair in fluid power and motion control and a professor of mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech, he is the chief manufacturing officer at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the executive director of the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute. He has been an active member of ASME for more than 30 years, holding a variety of volunteer positions including member at large of the ASME Council on Standards and Certification and Committee on Government Relations, as well as chairing the Manufacturing Public Policy Task Force. In addition, the ASME BoG voted and appointed Andrew S. Bicos, PhD, to an open position for the fiscal year 2024 following his three-year term that ends on June 30. Bicos is an independent consultant who recently retired from The Boeing Co. after more than 30 years in executive management in R&D. An ASME member since college, he has been actively involved for more than 25 years, starting on the Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee.
