Metro stations across Chennai will get 41 new escalators to ease commuter travel across stations and between corridors, Infra.com reports. Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) has identified 22 metro stations to receive new escalators in addition to those existing. Increased foot traffic in recent months has led to calls to install more escalators. CMRL officials say all stations were designed for two escalators to link the concourse and street levels, but they were not installed during the initial construction phase to save costs. Each metro station in phase 1 now has an average of five escalators and, with the addition of 41 escalators, the average number of escalators would increase to six.
