BART Station Seeking Funding Approval for Elevator Update
Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) 16th Street Mission Station may replace an ailing elevator in coming years — at a total cost of US$5 million, Mission Local reports. The current elevator at 16th Street was built in 1973, and was designed to provide 30 to 40 years of service. The most recent maintenance happened last year, when the street-level elevator was out of service for a month, but the 50-year-old elevator has never been modernized. The elevator currently experiences frequent breakdowns. If approved, modernization would begin in June 2024 and be completed in December 2029 and would provide modernizations to the controller equipment, hoist machines, electrical wiring, cab, call button, doors and other items. BART has 138 elevators in all its stations. The 16th Street Mission Station has two, one from the street to concourse level, and another from the concourse down to the platform. The San Francisco County Transportation Authority recently allocated nearly US$18 million for elevator improvements at five San Francisco stations, according to the source.
