Britain’s First Curved Escalators Coming to Luxury Retailer

The famous Knightsbridge department store Harrods in London, England, U.K., is planning a multimillion-pound renovation that will include the addition of Britain’s first curved escalators, Fashion Network is among outlets to report. According to planning documents, the new technology will be introduced in the lower ground floors of the luxury retailer. The renovations include a plan to deepen the lower ground and sub-basement levels to create a double-height hall, merging the store’s fine watches and fine jewelry departments. In addition to the curved escalators, each brand based in Harrods’ basement would also get its own eight-10-person lift for privacy and security. The proposal, said to bring “innovation to the U.K.,” also includes fluted marble columns, inspired by the draped fabric of Lady Britannia on the store’s Brompton Road façade, and a 1920s replica ceiling.
