Despite being under work for more than a year, the Thiruvottiyur Theradi rail station in Chennai, India, is yet to begin operations, Times of India has reported. The station is within a 9-km line between phases Wimco Nagar and Washermenpet, but a land acquisition hassle, change in alignment and station design have caused problems delaying the station’s opening. The north Chennai line contributes to nearly 30% of the area riders, despite restriction caused by the pandemic lockdown. The Theradi station could help boost footfalls, given its proximity to markets and ancient temples. People from the area have been boarding trains from stations, about 1 km away. Without the Theradi station, commuters typically ride an autorickshaw or walk to destinations near the non-operating station. The Theradi station stands about 17 m in height, but because it is at a narrow street, it has no room for escalators. Instead, users will have access to six elevators. A local official said the station will open soon but did not give a specific timeline.
