A boy estimated to be 5 or 6 years old fell from an escalator handrail in Nanjing City, China, on September 3, The Nanjinger is among news outlets to report. The child, who was said to be unchaperoned at the time, grabbed and climbed onto the handrail of a downward-moving escalator and hung on for approximately 8 s before falling to the floor. He was transported to a local hospital. Mall staff said during the next day’s meeting they discussed the importance of reminding customers to not let children out of their sight. Some malls have installed protective nylon nets on the open side of escalators, but that is not required by Chinese regulations.
