Cook Islands Lift Breaks Down After a Month of Being Open

Cook Islands Investment Corp. (CIIC) confirmed the lift at the Ministry of Justice and Court House building in Avarua, Cook Islands, which broke down before Christmas, was again operational in mid-January after a visit from a Phoenix Elevators Ltd. technician from New Zealand, Cook Islands News reports. The passenger lift officially opened in November after an earlier completion date was projected for August 2023. The construction of the country’s first public passenger lift took nine months, following two years of planning. The reason for the failure was not known at press time, but a full report from New Zealand was expected. The initial assessment indicated it could have been due to a fault with the lift’s sensors. The contractor is Phoenix Elevators, and the lift has an 18-month defect liability period, requiring the contractor to remedy any manufacture and installation issues. Officials hope to be able to diagnose and remedy the issue quickly.
