Deep Subway In NYC Forces Riders To Climb Long Stairs

Subway riders in Manhattan, NYC, are having difficulty getting around if their path forces them to enter the station at Fort Washington and 181st Street, because the escalators have broken down, forcing them to climb up or down the 10-level stairway access, 4NBC New York reports. The Washington Heights station is one of the deepest subway stations in all five of the city’s boroughs, but now all three of the station’s escalators are off limits. Sources said two of the escalators had been operating while the third unit was set to return to operation by the end of May. Now, however, officials say all of the station’s units will be out of commission until February 2023. The escalators are run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), but Fort Washington riders are finding it difficult to travel. One witness said, “for people with mobility issues, this will be a huge challenge.”
