A medical doctor died this week at a hospital in Odan, Lagos Island, Nigeria, in an elevator crash. According to findings by Punch, the hospital elevator fell from the 10th floor to the ground floor, and the doctor was rushed to the emergency ward for treatment but eventually died. Another hospital employee told the source that the elevator had malfunctioned several times before the fatal incident. Since the incident on August 2, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has indicted the hospital management over the death, saying it occurred “because the hospital management failed to maintain their facilities, the source reports. He called on the Lagos State Government and the police to investigate the matter thoroughly to forestall a recurrence. Additionally, a civil society group, the Network for Democracy and Development, has described the incident leading to the doctor’s death as “unacceptable” and a case of “criminal negligence” on the part of those who were responsible for ensuring a safe environment for hospital workers.
