Laurie Dueitt celebrated her 25th anniversary as Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation (EESF) program director in May. A native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Dueitt moved to Mobile, Alabama, where EESF is based, many years ago when her father retired from the U.S. Coast Guard. She remembers responding to an (actual) newspaper ad for a job as EESF program assistant in 1998, “and the rest is history.” Over the years, Dueitt has gained a wealth of knowledge about the vertical-transportation (VT) industry and VT safety. What has been most rewarding about her role, she says, is the response from children. “Getting cards that students made after seeing the program and seeing the pictures they drew would just make me smile,” she said. “Classroom presentations at the schools were electric.” Always a familiar face at events, Dueitt says the industry people she has met are “truly amazing, and lifelong friends have been made.”
