Members of the European Federation for Elevator Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (EFESME) joined members of FEPYMA, the Spanish federation representing the interests of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for a November 17 event in Tenerife, Spain, focused on barriers. In one panel, delegates explored the meaning of word “barrier” itself, concluding it refers to not only architectural barriers but also technological, content-related and linguistic ones. Barriers, it was concluded, are “all those obstacles, whether large or small, that prevent lift SMEs from fully expressing their capabilities and potential.” In another panel, EFESME participated with its European partner Small Business Standards (SBS) to discuss the role and importance of breaking down barriers of technical lift standards developed at the European and international levels. EFESME Policy Advisor Elettra Bilibio represented the Federation and SBS was represented by its Director General Maitane Olabarria Uzquiano. The pair emphasized the fundamental role of standards in breaking down barriers that prevent SMEs from making progress.
