Elderly Man Dies in Lift Mishap in India on New Year’s Day

A 78-year-old man visiting a marriage hall in the Mylapore neighborhood in central Chennai, India, died instantly on New Year’s Day when a lift hit him in the head, the Times of India reports. At the facility to attend a New Year’s program on the second floor, the man pressed a button to call the elevator to the ground floor. After waiting a few minutes, he opened the door and peered into the elevator shaft to see if the lift was coming. The descending lift collided with his head, causing fatal injuries. Local police registered a case against both the lift operator and maintenance provider for failing to ensure passenger safety, and several individuals were arrested.
