Developer Jamestown LP contributed US$10 million and the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) added US$40 million for a new entrance to the Times Square subway station — the system’s busiest — that includes an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant elevator, Gothamist is among outlets to report. MTA told ELEVATOR WORLD the elevator was manufactured by Mid-American Elevator. Part of MTA’s US$300-million 42nd Street Connector project, the entrance is in the pedestrian plaza near the corner of 43rd Street, across from the site of the New Year’s Eve ball drop. In addition to the elevator, it features a 15-ft-wide staircase, what MTA describes as the longest mosaic in the subway system, and 18 new security cameras. During a ribbon cutting on May 16, MTA Chairman Janno Lieber provided an update on the plan for installing more elevators throughout the subway system. He said 80 are under development and contracts have been signed for 26.
