Elevator Work Almost Complete at South Dakota Museum

The Codington County Heritage Museum in downtown Watertown, South Dakota, is on its way to becoming more accessible with the installation of an outdoor, glass elevator, KXLG reports. Since 1975, the museum has been housed in the historic Carnegie Library, which has large steps leading to the front entrance. Museum Director Christy Lickei began the process of making the building accessible to all two years ago. Because the Library building is on the National Register of Historic Places, there were limits to what structural changes could be made. Access Elevator & Lifts of Tea, South Dakota, was selected to install the outdoor elevator. Work was nearly complete when workers determined some of the lift’s parts were missing. Installation will resume when the needed parts arrive from Canada. The cost of the project, including the concrete work, elevator equipment and installation, was approximately US$115,000 and funded by donations.
