Contrary to what many community members had long believed, elevators are not part of accessibility upgrades at the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Forest Hills station in Queens, NY, the Queens Chronicle reports. During a community meeting on the evening of September 19, LIRR representatives said existing ramps will be replaced, which is compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and will “help the LIRR and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) get ‘more bang for their buck’ with the MTA’s five-year capital plan.” In response to a Transportation Committee member of Community Board 6 saying the committee “understood that U.S. Rep. Grace Meng had secured federal money for work that specifically included elevators,” a LIRR representative said that MTA representatives must have misspoken during previous conversations with Community Board 6 members.
