EngineeringUK Leader Comments on STEM Exam Results

Becca Gooch, head of Research at the nonprofit EngineeringUK organization, congratulated students receiving Advanced (A)- and two-year qualification (T)-level results in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects on August 15. “STEM A levels provide a key route into engineering and tech careers, and we are particularly pleased to see a slight uptick in the numbers of girls sitting A levels in computing and design and technology (D&T),” she said. The number of girls sitting for A-level computing subjects was 17% (up from 15% in 2023), and for D&T was 32% (up from 30% in 2023). Entries in A-level courses now exceed 100,000, and are growing in T-level courses with 7,380 students receiving T-level results — twice as many as last year with nearly 90% receiving a pass. “Between now and 2030, engineering jobs are growing faster than any other occupation,” Gooch observed. “So, we really hope today’s results encourage more young people, and especially girls, to consider and exciting and rewarding STEM career.”
