Escalator Breakdown Hurts Dozens at Taiwan Station
Dozens of riders going up an ascending escalator at the Xinpu rail station in Taipei, Taiwan, fell on March 11 when the moving stair system suddenly began operating backward, Daily Mail reports. Many of the riders fell into a crush at the bottom of the unit, which is operated by Taipei Metro rail. Footage shows the steps in the Taiwanese capital suddenly speeding backward as passengers were trying to reach the ticket hall from the Blue Line. Three of the fallen commuters sustained minor cuts and scrapes, while another passenger suffered a sprained ankle. Officials said there was a fault in the brake system, but the maintenance provider is checking this and all the line’s escalators.
