On August 22, Central Railway (CR) General Manager Naresh Lalwani inaugurated a CCTV monitoring system for the 118 escalators serving stations in greater Mumbai, India, the Hindustan Times reports. Aimed at improving operational efficiency and mitigating people needlessly pressing emergency-stop buttons, the system displays a red signal and issues a voice alert when an escalator stops. It also generates alerts about scheduled maintenance. CR officials said they receive at least 50,000 complaints each month about escalators malfunctioning or stopping. The new system allows a CR staffer to remotely monitor and address issues from a control room.
