Vertical-transportation equipment including elevators will be added to a historic NJ Transit commuter railroad station where riders have been walking up and down stairs for more than 100 years, PIX 11 is among outlets to report. Over the next four years, an unspecific number of elevators and other security and accessibility upgrades are in store for the Brick Church Station in East Orange, New Jersey, which is three or four stops from Penn Station in NYC. The US$83 million in funding is coming from tax dollars earmarked for transit and potential new development by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). East Orange Mayor Ted Green said new housing, including 20% that’s affordable, will be built next door. Acting FTA Administrator Veronica Vanterpool said the Brick Church Station upgrade is an example of transit-oriented development. “We expect to see continued progress, with vision and leadership,” she said.
