Indian Railways: Nearly 600 Stations Accessible With Lifts and Escalators

Indian Railways (IR) said 597 of its stations are accessible with lifts and escalators installed as part of the Accessible India Campaign, The Economic Times Is among outlets to report. Through December 2023, 1,287 escalators had been installed at 372 stations, and 1,292 elevators had been installed at 497 stations. During the 2023 calendar year, 128 escalators and 227 elevators were installed. IR said adding vertical-transportation equipment to stations to make them more accessible for the elderly, physically disabled and ill is a continuous, ongoing process. However, some disability activists contend that not enough priority is given to elevators, which are more user-friendly than escalators for “passengers with locomotor disabilities and senior citizens.”
