India’s NCR Installs VVVF Drives on Lifts and Escalators

India’s North Central Railway (NCR) is installing variable voltage-variable frequency (VVVF) drives on elevators and escalators at stations throughout the system to reduce power consumption, Hindustan Times reports. VVVF drives have been added to 40 escalators with 26 more scheduled, and 28 elevators with 10 more scheduled. Besides providing better ride quality and floor leveling, VVVF drives reduce starting current by up to 80% compared to traditional drives, in turn minimizing equipment wear and tear. NCR expects to reduce energy consumption by up to 40% as a result of implementing the technology.
