IUEC Workers in Newfoundland and Labrador on Strike

Approximately 20 International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) Local 125-A members who build and repair elevators and escalators in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, are on strike for the fourth time in fewer than 20 years, CBC is among outlets to report. The latest five-year agreement between Local 125-A, the Construction Labour Relations Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and the National Elevator & Escalator Association expired in April, and approximately 10 Local 125-A members picketed on July 21 outside a new medical facility under construction in St. John’s, Newfoundland. A spokesman for the Labour Relations Association, which represents the workers, said inflation and the rising costs of food and gasoline make it a “difficult time to negotiate.” IUEC Local 125-A previously went on strike in 2005, 2011 and 2016.
