Long Out-of-Service Escalators at Busy Liverpool Station Being Repaired

The Liverpool Council has confirmed that a pair of long out-of-service escalators at the entrance to one of the busiest train stations on the Merseyrail network in Liverpool, U.K., is expected to be up and running by June, Liverpool World reports. The units serving the Moorfields station at the city center broke down approximately seven months ago, and it had been hoped that work would start immediately. In October 2023, vertical-transportation provider KONE, which was awarded a EUR37,202 (US$40,257) contract, said the units “require a major intervention” that entails cleaning, servicing and replacing parts to satisfy safety and health requirements. The station saw footfall of approximately 5.1 million people in 2023, and the broken escalators have impacted accessibility. Before work to revive the escalators can begin, repairs to a leaking canopy above them have to be made.
