Missing Bolts Led To Deadly Stockholm Elevator Collapse

Missing bolts caused a construction elevator to collapse in a Stockholm, Sweden, suburb in December 2023, killing five people, the Swedish Investigation Authority determined, the Associated Press is among outlets to report. The deadly crash “was caused by failure to perform relevant safety inspections of the hoist assembly,” the Authority observed. Five of the nut-and-bolt assemblies required to hold together the elevator’s mast were missing, and the shaft was standing due only to friction between its sections. The structure collapsed when the load on the mast became more than it could hold, “leading to mast sections separating and the hoist car falling to the ground,” the Authority wrote. It has not yet been determined if criminal charges will be filed.
