The NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced in January that the Woodhaven Boulevard subway station in Woodhaven, Queens, is now fully accessible with two street-to-platform elevators manufactured and installed by Modern Elevator. Modern Elevator worked alongside MLJ Contracting Corp. and TC Electric, LLC, on the station upgrades, which also included two new staircases, upgraded platforms and new fare control areas. Woodhaven Boulevard is the first MTA accessibility project built to bypass an existing mezzanine using direct-to-platform elevators, allowing customers to reach the platform faster with only one elevator and simplifying the trip. The innovative approach also saved approximately US$40 million from the project budget, made possible by the Federal Transit Administration in the form of a US$177-million grant.
