Otis Inaugurates New Spain Factory with King Felipe VI

Otis inaugurated its new, 17,000-m2 factory for manufacturing elevator machines, governors and safeties in San Sebastian, Spain, on June 16 in the presence of King Felipe VI of Spain and other distinguished guests. Building on the legacy of the previous factory established in San Sebastian in the 1920s, the new facility “marks our renewed commitment to developing high-precision manufacturing in the Basque Country,” Otis CEO and President Judy Marks said. With 80% of its products exported, the factory boasts improved space management and manufacturing processes that enables Otis to soon manufacture an electronic safety actuator for its new, connected Gen360TM elevator platform. Using sustainable materials including steel, prefabricated concrete and aluminum reduced the factory’s environmental impact. Further, like all Otis factories in Spain, it is powered by 100% renewable energy, and a project is underway to install solar panels that produce the equivalent of up to 25% of the site’s baseload electricity demand. The factory is targeting LEED Gold certification by year’s end, and LEED Platinum certification soon after.
