Developer Cadillac Fairview has submitted for approval a plan to build a 21-story residential building on top of the CF Rideau Centre shopping mall in downtown Ottawa, Canada, STOREYS reported in December. The project, set at 70 Nicholas Street, is being designed in partnership with Montreal-based NEUF Architects. It calls for adding 280 luxury rental units of one or two bedrooms each, and about 2,500 ft2 of ground-floor retail space to complement the existing shopping center. Central to the proposed site’s transformation is the preservation, integration and adaptive reuse of a heritage building opened in 1874. Under the plan, the building would be restored and relocated farther north, with the new high-rise above it. If built, the redevelopment will include an enhanced pedestrian environment anchored by a landscaped plaza that will include a café/bar, plus a number of amenities. The rooftop will offer a 360° view of the city, including Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal. A construction timeframe was not reported.
