Repairs Begin on Toronto Bridge Elevator

The City of Toronto has confirmed the start of repairs on the Liberty Village bridge elevator 10 months after it was damaged by a fire in the elevator on the south side of the King-Liberty Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge in November 2021, forcing the closure of the walkway that connects King Street to Western Battery Road, CityNews reports. The bridge has three flights of stairs, so the damage has left it inaccessible to many in the community. Toronto Mayor John Tory told the source over the weekend that he planned to escalate the issue at City Hall. Now, the city says the first phase of the repairs will see a temporary fix to the broken glass panels of the elevators, and the elevators should be operational by the end of the August after an inspection. A second phase will permanently replace the exterior glass panels, but the elevators will remain open during this phase. This phase is anticipated to take eight to 10 weeks.
