San Francisco’s Second Supertall Part Of Hines’ Huge Plan

Hines plans to transform the 3.5-acre former headquarters of Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) in downtown San Francisco into a vibrant, mixed-use community that includes an 85-story, 1-million-ft2 supertall residential tower designed by Foster + Partners that would be only 4 ft shorter than Salesforce Tower, San Francisco YIMBY reports. The supertall, 50 Main Street, would join 1.6 million ft2 of modernized office space within two historic buildings: PG&E’s 1920s Beaux Arts building at 215-245 Market Street and a 34-story, 1960s office building designed by Hertzka and Knowles at 77 Beale Street. Pickard Chilton will be in charge of reskinning and enlarging the latter structure, to be renamed 200 Mission Street, and incorporating features aimed at LEED Platinum certification. The entire project encompasses a block directly next to the Embarcadero Bay Area Rapid Transit station. While no rendering of the supertall had been revealed in December, Norman Foster of Foster + Partners provided clues in a press release that said the tower would be a “beacon of sustainable design with a redwood forest at its base.”
