Schindler tells ELEVATOR WORLD it provided a vertical-transportation (VT) system that includes 41 escalators and 20 elevators for the new Grand Central Madison subway station in NYC, providing, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), “a seamless Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trip to Manhattan’s East Side.” The station opened on February 27. The VT package consists of 38 Schindler 9700 escalators plus three manufactured in storage for future access for upcoming skyscraper 415 Madison and 20 elevators — four traction, four freight, 11 hydraulic and one sidewalk lift. “The new LIRR service to Manhattan’s East Side is the most transformative change to LIRR service in over a century,” MTA observed. “In addition to opening a monumental new station below the historic Grand Central Terminal, there will be more trains running during peak hours and better reverse commuting options to Long Island.”
