Shanghai Building Repairs, Elevator Installations Underway

Authorities in Shanghai have ordered the overhaul of exterior walls on downtown buildings after a woman was killed by falling debris, Shine reported on April 12. In addition, elevators will be installed citywide. The city’s construction and housing authorities have ordered an inspection of all the buildings by the end of April. Regulators said all buildings should be covered in the overhaul and inspected regularly. Meanwhile, a citywide campaign to install elevators in old residential buildings has been accelerated in downtown neighborhoods. Putuo District alone plans to install 200 elevators at residences for the convenience of elderly people. By the end of March, a total of 265 elevators had been installed in Putuo, including 66 that are in operation and 42 under construction.
