Suffolk University Facing Elevator Issues

Boston’s Suffolk University’s Sawyer Building saw the abrupt closure of all five of its elevators on September 6 as a result of an electrical issue that affected the control system, The Suffolk Journal reports. This closure forced a number of classes to be relocated. University officials say “the best course of action to ensure sustained and reliable elevator service is to pursue long-term solutions rather than quick fixes.” This means elevator modernization, as a part of the University’s major capital investment, which was approved in the spring. University Spokesman Greg Gatlin said in a statement to the source that Suffolk began work this summer on this “major capital investment” to make improvements to the elevators. Repairs and work to improve elevator service are expected to continue throughout the academic year. There is no estimated cost currently because the project is still in the beginning stages. Suffolk is a “vertical campus,” so an expert consultant was brought in to inspect and proactively identify issues to be addressed in other campus elevators.
