TfL Mulling VT Upgrades at East London Rail Station

Transport for London (TfL) is considering vertical-transportation (VT) upgrades and more at the Pontoon Dock Docklands Light Railway station in East London, Ian Visits reports. TfL filed an application with Newham Council asking permission to undertake the upgrades, which would include retaining the bulk of the station and adding six escalators from the ground to the platform level. Mott MacDonald with Weston Williamson + Partners have drawn up plans. Adding escalators would reduce passengers overusing the lifts to avoid climbing stairs. Both lifts and stairs would remain. Although the debut of the Elizabeth Line and a rise in working from home was expected to reduce passenger numbers at the station, they are still at 90% of pre-pandemic levels. With thousands of new homes in the pipeline, TfL expects passenger numbers there to rise by roughly a third by 2041.
