Three escalators at the entrance to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) L’Enfant Plaza station ceased operation on May 9 so custom-built units could be installed to replace ones that are nearly 40 years old, outlets including WUSA 9 reports. Once that trio is replaced (anticipated in November), crews will work to replace the remaining six escalators serving the station at Maryland Avenue and Seventh Street South West in southwest Washington, D.C. Replacement of those six is scheduled from September 2023 through October 2025. The work is part of a seven-year, US$179-million escalator replacement project being handled by KONE that aims to install 130 new escalators by 2028.
