TK Elevator’s (TKE) TWIN elevator system, featuring two cabins operating independently in the same shaft, is debuting in Italy, with the OEM announcing in July it signed a contract to provide 12 TWINs to the Portals in Milan. Developed by COIMA and designed by Milan-based Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel in the Porta Nuova district, the office project consists of a 98-m-tall tower — which will be served by the TWINs — and a shorter structure. It is scheduled for completion in 2024. CORRIERE DELL UMBRIA reports that the units will travel at 5 m/s and traverse the entire height of the tower in less than 20 s. TKE observed the system will provide up to 3,500 passengers per day “an exceptional mobility experience” that reduces travel time by up to 30%. The system also occupies roughly half the shaft space of a traditional system and provides energy savings of up to 30%. Each cabin can accommodate up to 24 passengers at a time. “This is not an isolated project, but part of a broader development strategy of TKE in Italy,” TKE Italia CEO Luigi Maggioni tells CORRIERE DELL UMBRIA.
