TSSA To Implement New Elevator Outage Reporting Rules

Ontario’s Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) announced on December 15 new rules that go into effect on July 1, 2022, requiring owners of elevators in residential buildings and long-term care facilities to report elevator outages lasting more than 48 h. The reporting will need to be completed within 30 days of the day the elevator was returned to service. The new rules will also give the public access to information about elevator outages via TSSA’s website. TSSA said the information will help the government decide whether further changes related to elevator safety and availability are needed. Detailed information about the reporting will be available in spring 2022. Observing there are nearly 20,000 passenger elevators across more than 10,000 residential and institutional buildings in Ontario, TSSA said as the province continues to experience rapid construction growth, including high-rise condominiums, stakeholders have raised a variety of issues related to the safety of elevators.
