Two similar instances of an escalator step snapping off occurred within the same week at Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) stations, The Standard is among outlets to report. In the late morning of November 13, one of the steps at the top of an upward-moving escalator serving the Chai Wan MTR station at the eastern terminus of the Island Line became “out of line and damaged, with metal scraps flying everywhere.” That incident is believed to have been the result of a passenger’s sweater becoming stuck between the steps. A similar incident, believed to have been caused by a shoe becoming stuck, happened on November 12 at Tsim Sha Tsui station serving southern Kowloon.
