A US$12-million modernization project at the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s (MDOT MVA) Glen Burnie branch office includes replacing escalators installed in 1961 that are among “only a few remaining of their kind in any state-owned building,” MDOT MVA announced. Aimed at renewing the building’s 60-year-old infrastructure, the 18-month, six-phase project began on April 3 and will also include installing new elevators, adding security features, building new accessible restrooms and adding offices for MVA Police, the Transportation Security Administration and the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs. Completion of the escalator portion of the project is targeted for late 2023. The Glen Burnie office is MDOT MVA’s largest, visited by approximately 393,000 customers annually.
