Video Shows Escalator Steps Coming Apart at Kuala Lumpur Mall

A video posted online on June 28 shows the upper steps of an escalator at a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur coming apart as riders run down the unit, The Straits Times is among outlets to report. No one was injured, according to the poster, who said a loud noise preceded the steps crumbling. Photos show the escalator’s inner machinery rising up through the steps, which lie crumpled at the top landing. The social media user reminded riders to be alert while riding escalators and refrain from listening to loud music “so they can act quickly if something were to happen.” What caused the malfunction is unclear.
