Water Exposure Causing Escalator Closures at Boston Aquarium Station

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) says prolonged water exposure caused extended escalator closures at a key entrance of the Aquarium stop on the Blue Line in Boston, MSN reports. The entrance’s escalators have been down since last year, causing frustration amongst passengers who must climb 61 steps if they want to use the specific entrance and exit. The “down” escalator has been inoperable since April 2024, and the “up” escalator has been inoperable since November 2024. The MBTA says the escalator is up for a complete overhaul due to years of water exposure and plans to implement its five-year capital investment plan that includes more than US$12 million in escalator and stair repairs. The MBTA has reported that work on the “up” escalator is nearly complete but has not provided a finish date.
