At least six workers were killed when the shaft of an elevator broke on the 16th floor of a 40-story building under construction in Balkum, Thane West, India, the Hindustan Times is among outlets to report. Other outlets have reported that all seven of the workers died. According to Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) officials, the building was completed, and waterproofing was under way on the roof. After completing the waterproofing, the seven workers were taking the elevator down. RDMC officials said the elevator rope broke, leading to the fall from the 16th floor to the basement. Kapurbawdi police officials said that the initial inquiry had been completed and an accidental death report was filed. A statement from the project promoter said the elevator fell from the 13th floor, adding, “The last proactive maintenance was done on August 23 where due oiling, servicing, lift room check-up, brake settings, car liner checking and up-on limit switch checking was satisfactorily done by the vendor. The assessment report states the good condition of the lift.” The promoter said it was cooperating with the police and the inquiry. The large residential project has four buildings approved up to the 42th floor and seven buildings with 36 floors, according to information on the MahaRERA portal.
