A 6-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition from a fall down an elevator shaft at an apartment building in Bronx, NYC, on April 21, NBC New York is among outlets to report. New York Police Department and Fire Department of New York responders were called to the scene on Grand Concourse at approximately 12:45 p.m. Left briefly unattended, the child, who the family says is autistic, unlocked the front door to the first-floor unit and made his way to the sixth-floor roof. He then “somehow slipped through a tiny opening on top of the elevator shaft” and landed on top of the elevator cab in the basement. Police are unable to determine how far the boy fell because they are unsure where the elevator was at the time of the incident. Inspectors with the NYC Department of Buildings are investigating whether there were any noncompliance issues with the elevators doors leading to the shaftway in an effort to determine how the child gained access.
