In Memoriam: Raymond Nelson

Raymond Nelson, a longtime elevator man whose career spanned more than 60 years, passed away on September 1 in Perth, Australia. An employee of Otis Australia, Nelson was deputed to India in the 1960s to instruct on the assembly of 32R escalators — the first in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. His work ethic and dedication kept Nelson with Otis in India for many years, helping introduce the UMV and gearless Otis elevator models. From India, Nelson headed to Otis Pacific, then Latin American, operations. While in Latin America, he learned Spanish and Portuguese. He also earned his pilot’s flying license. Nelson later took a sabbatical to his hometown of Perth, where he did a bit of gold mining. However, the elevator calling was too strong, and he returned to Otis’ Pacific Field Operations team. Throughout his Otis career, Nelson had friends on every continent. “His value was recognized by his company, and his elevator knowledge was well-received throughout the industry,” colleague T.J. Rodericks said. “His demise will be deeply felt by his daughters, Tanya and Sharon, and their families.”
