Every year ahead of the summer season, inspectors from the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) Elevator Unit head to Coney Island to inspect the amusement park rides to make sure that they are safe for operation, ABC 7 reports. In mid-March, the DOB inspected Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park’s rides and elevators. The inspectors with the elevator unit are tasked with making sure rides are safe before the amusement parks open for the season. They check everything from the inflatables to the 100-year-old carousel, and the iconic Wonder Wheel, which was built in the 1920s. Once they are given the green light, the rides are ready for the public, though the DOB may perform additional inspections periodically throughout the season, which begins April 13.
